Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
