The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.

His child, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's determination was the possibility of his transfer to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist American leader Trump, leading him to impose a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being detained in a national police facility in the capital and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that the former president be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was thwarted because it failed to get the support of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The police took action and around 1,500 people were detained.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
