Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

However, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
