Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the ability to challenge particular decisions from the official, mirroring the protocol already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
